Optimism works as an additional protocol on top of Ethereum’s blockchain. Thus, it is a second layer on top of the blockchain of layer 1, in this case Ethereum. This makes it possible to support all decentralized applications implemented on Ethereum with Optimism, increasing speed and reducing cost. Nevertheless, the Ethereum blockchain is still used for recording information about transactions.
