Not too often do projects burst onto the crypto scene and immediately earn the label ‘Solana killer.’ Yet both of these contenders have done just that. While they’re rivals in many ways, they also share some similarities. Which one will end up as the big leader this cycle? Let’s take a closer look…

Sei vs. Sui – Will one of them become the new Layer-1 King?
The battle for speed, scalability and mass Web-3 dominance is on! In the world of crypto, two upcoming names you’ve probably noticed by now have been in the spotlight lately quite often: Sui and Sei. Both exceptionally fast Layer-1 projects that are often compared, but both have their own ways and ambitions. Let’s have a look.
Speed and performance
Built on Cosmos, Sei combines parallel transaction processing with EVM compatibility. With 12,500 transactions per second and “GigaGas” capacity, Sei aims for unprecedented speed for DeFi and trading.
Sui, spun off from Facebook’s Diem project, introduces an object-based architecture. With theoretical speeds of up to 297,000 TPS and the innovative Mysticeti consensus mechanism, it is a technical masterpiece, especially suitable for demanding apps such as games.
Gaming vs. DeFi
At the moment, Sui is fully committed to Web3 gaming. With titles such as Run Legends and its own handheld SuiPlay0X1, the platform is attractive to game developers and users. Sui is also growing rapidly in DeFi with protocols such as Scallop and Turbos. This week, the rumour emerged on social media that Sui might even have a hand in the new legendary Pokémon game:
Sei focuses mainly on DeFi and trading applications, with fast execution and low latency. The gaming offering is growing, but remains more modest than at Sui. TVL (Total Value Locked) however is growing rapidly at Sei, and some speculate that price will soon catch up.
Conclusion
Sui is strong in innovation and ease of use, and impresses when it comes to gaming. Sei accelerates in performance for DeFi and EVM-integration. Until now, Sui has been the market leader between the two, with a market cap all-time high of around $15 billion. Sei’s all-time high is $2,5 billion, so around 6 times smaller. Can it maybe catch up with Sui this year? We will see. One thing is clear, both are serious projects. Which one will fully take over the crypto space will probably depend on real-world adoption and a touch of hype.
